7 of the biggest fashion trends for 2017

2017 is here and we can’t get enough of the new fashion trends that are setting the scene this year. If upping your style made it onto your new years’ resolution list, be sure not to miss 7 of the biggest trends to fall in love with this season.

Shirting
This street style trend makes for easy fashion, mainly because you already have the key element of this look hanging in your closet – a plain cotton shirt.

Do: go oversized. This trend is all about looking androgynous and can be worn all year long, from summer through to winter. Style a large cotton, collared shirt belted at the waist over a feminine dress or thrown on over a tank top for a casual look. This look is as versatile as a cotton shirt is classic.
Don’t: be afraid. Take this trend wherever your instinct tells you. It can be worn as many ways as you can imagine.

Sleeves
Slits and bell sleeves and ruffles, oh my! This year it’s all about the sleeve detailing.

Do: ease yourself into this trend by trying a cut-out shoulder, the latest incarnation of last season’s shoulderless tops.
Don’t: pair embellished sleeves with anything too overbearing on your bottom half.

80s Shoulders
The 80s are set to be the biggest aesthetic of 2017 and the quintessential 80s look, the strong shoulder, is back in a big way.

Do: go for structured shoulders in jackets to give you different movement in your outfit as well as an interesting new shape.
Don’t: overdo it, pair your 80s inspired shoulder pads with some sleek modern trousers, you don’t want to look like an extra in a Wham! Video.

Pink and Khaki
The unexpected colour combination of 2017, this is all about soft pinks juxtaposed with the sternness of khaki.

Do: go for pale pink, it is light, feminine and will be bang on trend in 2017
Don’t: be scared to replace black staples with khaki, treat it like it’s your new favourite neutral.

Cropped Flared Jeans
A bit of a controversial trend, the cropped flare is set to be a big fashion statement in 2017. If flares aren’t your style then opt for a classic straight leg or a skinny jean which can be worn casually or be easily dressed up should the need arise.

Do: let the flare balance out your body. The perfect style for curvier women, a high waisted pair of flares which hits you just above your ankle will make you look beautifully proportioned.
Don’t: go for a distressed look. Extra details like rips and tears take the eye away from the silhouette these jeans create.

Stripes
Have stripes ever really been out of fashion?! Well they’re well and truly IN in 2017!

Do: give thick, coloured stripes a go. It’s a great way to try something bolder than your standard navy or black and white stripe.
Don’t: wear a lighter coloured stripe tightly across an area you don’t wish to highlight, light and tight will make that area look bigger.

Pant Details
Splits, buttons and embroidery, the trend in pants is steadily moving away from normcore and towards embellishments. With high end designers like Prabal Gurung favouring multiple details like split hems and buttons, this fashion trend is set to take 2017 by storm.

Do: choose a pair of pants in a plain colour. The simplicity of a basic colour will allow the details to shine and not look too busy.
Don’t: go overboard. Stay away from styles that draw attention to too many different details at once.
